Let's get Gummy

I love going to the dentist. I'm serious. It's actually a pampering treat to have my teeth cleaned, it's almost like a trip to the spa or the parlor for me! I love the feeling of having each and every crevice of my mouth thoroughly cleaned. If you notice, aside from soft and bouncy hair, flawless skin, the most "beautiful" celebrities are the ones with a nice set of pearly whites. I don't have perfect teeth (I have bugs bunny teeth!) but I love them just the way they are. I'm a living smiley face so having healthy teeth is a MUST for me :) Here are some of my "TEETH IDOLS", their smiles are so sweet because of their TEETH!!!
Just the other day, Colgate asked me to review their latest product the Colgate Total Pro Gum Health toothpaste. I would always see gum care products in the supermarket but never really paid much attention to them. Just like most of you, I would check the labels for the standard benefits of "teeth whitening", "cavity protection", or "fresh breath". As long as those things were covered, I would be a happy customer. It was only because of this review request from Colgate that I actually took the time to research on GUM HEALTH and its impact on my teeth.

Turns out Gum Disease is no smiling matter. It affects a lot of people everyday, yet people don't really pay much attention to these gum problems. If you have the following symptoms, chances are you are silently suffering Gum Disease: 1) Gums bleed when you brush 2) Gums are red, swollen or tender 3) Gums have pulled away from teeth 4) A change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite 5)Persistent bad breath or bad taste in your mouth.

A lot of Filipinos are silently suffering from diabetes which makes them even more susceptible to gum disease. (I can hear my conscience giving me a stern lecture as I type this) As a sweet tooth and as a girl with a history of diabetes in her family, this is definitely something that hits so close to home.

According to the folks at Colgate, "Because diabetes makes the body more susceptible to bacterial infection, people with diabetes have a decreased ability to fight bacteria that invade the gum. People with diabetes get gum problems more often than people who do not have diabetes. Gum infections can make it hard to control blood sugar. Once a gum problem starts, it can take a long time to restore to health. In extreme cases, if the problem is severe, teeth can loosen or or even fall out. Good blood sugar control and proper gum care can help prevent gum problems."

"A good oral health program includes brushing your teeth twice a day, flossing, and seeing your dentist every six months. Colgate Total toothpaste is a good choice as it goes beyond fighting cavities. Colgate Total is clinically proven to provide 12-hour protection against gum problem-causing bacteria, for a full 12 hours*. Unlike other toothpastes, Colgate Total® Pro-Gum Health toothpaste helps reduce up to 90%* bacteria build-up that cause gingivitis, an early form of gum disease."

We all want to have that killer smile, but vanity aside, maybe it's high time we invest in taking care of our gums that hold all those pearly whites together. Just a small change in your routine can actually save your mouth from falling apart!

Walkway 2013

See you all at Walkway in Boni High Street!
We will be there ALL DAY from morning til midnight until Easter Sunday :)

The Fireplace at Hyatt Manila

Last Friday we celebrated our BF-GF anniversary..I know it sounds cheesy to be celebrating every frickin' occasion even if you're already married, but that's how we roll (or at least how I roll and my husband just gives in to my little whims). We really had nothing planned for Friday so when we got an invitation from Hyatt Manila to check out The Fireplace, we couldn't say NO! It was divine intervention I tell you!:) God saved my husband from the headache of planning a romantic dinner for his matampuhin misis. Hahaha!

It was a bit of a drive and we were 45 minutes late because we did not anticipate the heavy traffic along Roxas Blvd. Patrick and I are always early birds, even if we try to be late we are always the first to arrive! Hahaha! So being late for this dinner was a FIRST! hahaha!:) Thankfully, the staff was still very welcoming and forgiving of our tardiness and we were escorted to our romantic little spot in the restaurant.
"This fine dining, upscale grill room offering perfectly cooked prime meats and seafood showcasing culinary excellence and offers an interactive dining experience that is unique to a 5-star hotel in the Philippines." Although it's known for its steaks and grilled seafood, they also serve vegetarian dishes for those who would like to eat something lighter. Now if you're a wine lover (and not a fighter) then you'll be impressed by their selection too!  "Discover a fine wine library with a vast selection of European and New World wines, where a relaxed, sophisticated atmosphere, matched with excellent cuisine, provides a dining experience like no other – set amidst a luxury hotel in Manila Bay."
Since we were first timers, we asked for recommendations from our pleasant waiters. They were very patient with us, answering our questions very enthusiastically :) Before our salad came we had the complimentary walnut bread----this alone made me soooo happy! It was fresh from the oven, chewy and nutty. For starters, we had their best selling Millionaire's Salad (a medley of prawns, scallops, and foie gras that melts in your mouth!!!) and for our main course Patrick had Australian Wagyu Steak and I had a GINORMOUS LOBSTER, it was as big as Patrick's two feet! hahaha! The last time I had lobster was in Malaysia over a year ago so when the waiters alerted me to it, my low EQ self said "I'm having LOBSTER!" without even a moment's hesitation. As soon as it arrived at our table, I wanted to cry. I took my first bite and I could hear angels singing in the background!!!!!! The superstars were complimented with fabulous side dishes: potato gratin, mashed potato with truffle oil (my favorite!!!!), and portobello mushrooms. And of course for dessert, we ordered the famous chocolate soup with ice cream. Love!!!
To this day, even after the dozens of restaurants we've been to together, we ALWAYS feel so nervous and excited to eat at a fancy & sophisticated place! Patrick and I are very low key, we could have tortang talong for dinner and put 3 michelin stars on it! Hahaha! But when you eat at an EXCELLENT restaurant like The Fireplace, you completely understand how this could justify the splurge. The meals are NOT cheap, yes. But are they worth every penny? I would like to say YES to that too. Not to belittle your good old home cooked meals, but when you eat at a 5 star restaurant you just know that the ingredients they used are not the ones you'd find in your humble pantry. I can imagine even their salt is flown in from abroad! Hahaha! So today, I would like to share this luxury gastronomical experience with you too!

I'm giving away a gift certificate for a
at The Fireplace!

Style Crush: Miranda Kerr

Ok so she's a Victoria's Secret model with a tiny waist and long, long, long, long legs..I know it's close to impossible for me to ever look like her even if I get knee implants BUT I DONT CARE I LOVE HER I LOVE HER I LOVE HER! Hahaha!:) There are a lot of style tips we can pick up from our Mareng Miranda that we regular girls can adopt. Since I've been studying her style for weeks now (yes, serious girl crushing level na 'to!)---I would like to believe that I've become a certified Mirandologist! So allow me to share my "findings" with you today. To be more specific, let's narrow it down to Miranda-inspired everyday casual clothing :)

1. Be sure you can actually BREATHE in your clothes.
It's amazing how you can turn into a cast member of Jersey Shore just by the "breathability" of your clothes. Every time I see Snooki or J Woww (how do I even know these people?!?! I don't even watch their show!), I feel nervous that something's about to pop. Wearing something too tight not only makes you look and feel uncomfortable, it also draws attention to things that you don't exactly want people to focus on. If you look at Miranda's clothes, they're all tailored and well-fitting but she hardly wears anything that clings too closely to her body. To think she's a Victoria's Secret model! You're still able to see her figure but the fabrics always fall gently on her body as opposed to hugging it too tight. Here's a trick---stand in front of the electric fan, if your top/dress moves with the air then that means it's breathable! If it's immobile like someone wrapped your body with Reynold's cling wrap, then you might want to rethink your wardrobe. Of course, if you're wearing a swanky Herve Leger inspired cocktail dress that's meant to be sleek and snug--that's a different story.

2. Be sure you can actually MOVE in your clothes.
In line with number 1, mobility and comfort should go hand in hand when it comes to choosing your everyday clothes. Can you pick up a pen from the floor without ripping your jeans? Can you step out of a car without showing your hoo-ha to the world? In most of Miranda's paparazzi photos, she's seen carrying her toddler son and doing regular errands but still looking fab. This only proves that you can look polished but still be comfortable. You don't have to give up one for the other, it's possible to have both. Some people dress sloppy and use "comfort" as an excuse while others tend to dress over the top making them too high maintenance to even do anything productive. It's important to find a middle ground and to sort of have a marriage of style and function in your daily wardrobe.

3. Work with your body type.
We all have our "imperfections" like muffin tops, love handles, kilbils (kili kili bilbils), bra fat, and jiggly thighs. Even supermodels have their "flaws"--these body issues are what make us REAL women and having these things make us even more lovable! Diba, boys??? Let the clothes work in your favor, let them be your best friends. If the clothes in your closet are making you hate your body, then you bought the wrong types of clothes! As long as you are in your healthiest possible state and you know that you are taking good care of yourself---it doesn't matter what body type you have. It's the only type you've got and it just happens to be awesome! So make sure you buy the clothes that make you understand why God made you the way you are.

4. Dress for YOURSELF.
These days, I prettify myself just because it makes me happy. It sounds selfish, I know, but whenever I start putting on an outfit with someone else in mind that's when the insecurities kick in and I start to second guess my choices. When I just dress up FOR ME, it brings out a more relaxed yet polished look. I look like "PATTY LAUREL" and that to me is my best look. Hehehe.

When I make the effort to pull myself together it just puts me in a better mood. I remember when I was confined to the hospital for a week, I was a complete train wreck in my hospital gown and I didn't even have the willpower to look in the mirror because I was drugged up and groggy. The nurse told me "Maam, alam niyo po makakatulong talaga sa pag-galing niyo kung mag-suklay po kayo o magpaganda ng konti.". Of course my initial reaction was "What?!?!! Sobra naman tong nurse, Do I really look like crap now?!?!" but I could feel that it was coming from a place of genuine concern and experience so I tried it. I had to sort of limp my way to the toilet because I was still in a great amount of pain but I combed my hair, placed a bit of moisturizer and lip balm, put on my nice pajama slowly---and voila!!! I felt better! I felt like a stronger and happier version of myself again. It felt so good to be able to take care of myself and to look good for myself! Trust me, I didn't look anything close to glamorous but those little grooming tricks did wonders for my self esteem and emotional well being.

5. Dress like the WOMAN you already are (or at least are on your way to becoming!).

Miranda was born on April 20, 1983 making her just 3 days younger than me!!! UYYYYYY, pwede na kaming best friends!!! Hahahaha! Pinipilit ko talaga ang connection. There's something feminine and fresh about the way she carries herself that I admire. You can tell that she's over the phase of dressing up to make a statement or to prove a point. Wala ng "kati ng kabataan" (sorry, that was the only term I could think of!) wherein you're trying too hard to dress like everyone in your barkada---or in the opposite side of the spectrum when you're trying too hard to NOT dress like everyone else just to show how cool you are. It appears that Miranda dresses up and dresses down as she pleases because she's a full grown adult who's comfortable and confident in herself. (Ok, obviously this is just an assumption. Close kami?!?!)
Because she doesn't try too hard to dress like a teenager, she always looks age appropriate. In the same way, she still injects jeans, flats and well fitted tshirts making her wardrobe more youthful than the average 30 year old. Her makeup is kept to a minimum allowing her skin to glow naturally. Though I understand how for most women makeup is their "safety blanket" when stepping out into the real world---if you pile on too much, it can make you look dated and age you by 5 years. So keep it as close to your natural look as possible.

So there, as a certified Mirandologist I hope I was able to help you with these unofficial "Miranda Kerr Fashion Tips". At the end of the day, fashion should just be an extension of your personality. Dressing up can be easy if you just allow it to progress naturally :) I love you Mirandaaaaaaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Things to try this Summer

Shiny Ponies

My shoe collection consists of basics and neutrals..mostly safe and dependable flats. I think it's time to elevate my taste level and go for colorful and bold statement shoes :) This video just ignited my hidden desire for pretty shoes!!!! Uh-oh.

The Farm at San Benito

We finally got to use our Deal Grocer voucher for an overnight stay at The Farm!! Hooray! Pat has been working non-stop with edits left and right and it has been impossible for us to schedule this out of towner. He had to work while at The Farm to meet his deadlines but I'm glad it was still a vacation for us even if there was a bit of working in between (and in my case, lots of Candy Crushing! Hehehe).

After a long but scenic drive to Lipa, we finally made our way to the tree lined roads leading to The Farm. My friends Amanda and Alessa, both loud and proud vegetarians, consider this their mecca and now I understand why! As their website shares, "It is the sole sanctuary of its kind in the Philippines and one of the best in the world. The Farm is a life-changing retreat that enables its guests to cope with the ever-increasing stress-filled challenges of everyday life through a well-managed and tailored wellness programs for restoration of balance and harmony by encouraging a commitment to a proactive healthy lifestyle."

The Farm in San Benito is a sprawling property dotted with trees and vegetation. Though still maintaining an air of luxury, I'm happy they've kept things as "organic" as possible in terms of their food, service, decor and overall ambiance. As soon as we parked our car, Michael The GM, met us at the parking lot and even offered to carry my luggage. I was shocked that he actually carried it all the way to the lobby! His humble and easy going disposition was very impressive and I could tell his "servant leader" attitude has had a great effect on his staff.

We got upgraded to the beautiful NARRA POOL VILLA which had its own pool! What a blessing! God surprised us AGAIN. :) I couldn't wait to jump into the pool to officially start my summer 2013! The villa was extremely spacious, the bathroom alone was as big as a regular studio condo in Makati! hahaha. Here are some photos I grabbed from their site.

Now, I'll be honest--the food part was a bit of a challenge for me and Patrick especially since we are happy meat eaters. The Farm practices a very natural approach towards food and this why they only serve vegan/raw meals here. "We use specially designed dehydrators instead of cooking to give raw foods a variety of textures resembling cooked foods, without destroying the nutritional properties and enzymes of the foods. We serve warm soups rather than cooked hot soups in order to preserve the valuable nutritional building blocks the body needs to continuously rebuild and renew itself thus slowing the aging process and giving you energy and vitality."

Although we were thoroughly impressed by their dishes (they actually tasted good and satisfying), we were ailing for a fat juicy cheeseburger and TAPAAAAA! Hehehe! So my advice  to you is to really come prepared for the detox getaway, if you put yourself in a healthy mindset you will be able to maximize the benefits of having a meat free stay at The Farm. It'll do your mind and body good to eliminate all the toxins in your body--so don't think of it as a sacrifice since it's actually a treat for your body!
Aside from a specialized cuisine, they also provide a host of activities that could contribute to your quest for wellness. They have massages, yoga, acupuncture and alternative healing services as well. Had I known, I would've booked a stay at The Farm just after my surgery. A detox from all the medication I had to take would've been perfect and I'm sure it would've led me to a speedy recovery. Well, at least now I know!:)

If you're going through a lot of stress at work and if you feel like it's taking a toll on your health and overall wellbeing, I highly recommend checking into The Farm. This is also a great place to celebrate your special occasions with your hubby/wife/gf/bf :) It's a relatively easy 2 hour drive from Manila so it's really a quick escape from the chaos of the city.
Thank you again to the kind staff of
THE FARM at San Benito and Deal Grocer.

Avene is now in Manila

I'm so happy Avene is now in Manila!!! For years I've been hoarding them during my trips abroad, now I can rest well knowing that it's available in Mercury Drug outlets. Thanks to Avene Philippines for sending me a pack of my favorite products! The first time I discovered this brand was during a trip to Athens. Like I mentioned before, I have very sensitive skin that reacts even to the the slightest changes in weather, external factors like pollutants and even pollen from specific plants. I have a few trusted brands that my skin is "hiyang" to and this is definitely one of them. The secret they say is in the thermal spring water that can be found in the small town of Avene in France (hence the name!). This miracle water has been proven to treat, heal, and repair different skin sensitivities.
Avène Very High Protection SPF 50 Cream
It covers a very broad spectrum UV protection using a combination of exclusive active ingredients: SunSitive Protection from Pierre Fabre Research. Its photoprotective complex is optimized, stable and effective for extended periods of UV exposureFor dry skin with a rich and non-greasy texture. Rapidly absorbed without leaving any white marks on the skin.

MY NOTE: I have yet to try this but I'm excited to use it this summer! I've been on the lookout for SPF creams that are for sensitive skin :)

Avene Skin Recovery Cream

This is ideal for naturally sensitive skin. Created to be hypoallergenic for sensitive skin, Avène Skin Recovery Cream soothes and moisturizes skin that is prone to redness and irritated by climatic conditions and other aggressors.

MY NOTE: When my skin feels flaky or starts to crack, I whip this out as my emergency product. It saved my life when I was in Hong Kong battling the cold weather last December.

Avène Gentle Toner

This is an alcohol-free, oil-free toner with softening silicates protects the skin against external aggressions. Enriched with Natural Silicates, it protects the skin against external aggression without altering skin’s protective hydrolipidic film.

MY NOTE: I've steered clear of toners for years because they always seem to dry my skin leaving it dull and lifeless. But this toner is extremely gentle on my skin. I've been testing it for a week and I like the results so far!

Avene Thermal Spring Water

It is suitable for redness-prone skin; for inflamed Keratosis-prone, scaly skin; for Eczema/Atopic Dermatitis; for allergic reactions/sensitive skin/irritation; for burning/stinging/ itching/tingling sensations. This is suitable for daily concerns like: after cleansing, after shaving/after waxing, after exercise, during travel, sunburn, burns, diaper rash and to help set makeup.

MY NOTE: I love this product!!!!! It's the purest form of the thermal miracle water! It's amazing on my skin! It's great to use before and after makeup application to seal in the moisture.

Avene Extremely Gentle Cleanser
This cleanser is for intolerant Skin is a no-rinse cleansing gel that effectively removes impurities and minimizes skin irritation. Its formula has been specially developed with a minimum number of ingredients, all selected for their gentleness. This very fluid, oil-free, refreshing cleanser leaves sensitive skin perfectly clean and comfortable without drying.

MY NOTE: Of all the Avene products, this is the one I use religiously. I slather this on my face, massage it in a circular motion then take it off with facial tissue. For those who are allergic to soap and tap water, this is perfect for you!

Buddha Bar Manila

Cue Dramatic Bond music. Tenenentenenen.
Here's a photo of James and I having some drinks before dinner.
Patty (in my sultry voice): "So..James, you come here often?"
James Bond: "Yeah, I've been here about 3 times already. Just last month, a friend celebrated his birthday here. Sobrang saya namin!!!!!"
SHOCKER SPOILER ALERT: James Bond does not speak Tagalog. And that's NOT ME. I know it's hard to believe because the resemblance is uncanny but yes folks she is just my doppleganger. Bwahahahaha!:) :)
Ok fine, so I did not star in a James Bond movie..but the restaurant I'm about to blog about certainly made me feel like I was a glamorous bond girl! And besides my husband's full name is James Patrick could be James *cough..Patrick..cough* Bond! Hahaha, too painful of a push, ey? ANYWAY. Let me just rave about Buddha Bar in Manila! For the exquisite interiors alone, I would definitely rate this with a solid 5 stars. Since it's located in the middle of a busy part of the metro, you are actually shocked upon entering. It's almost like being transported to a different world! It's opulent, decadent, and completely lavish from floor to ceiling---even their bathrooms were so impressive, I wanted to hang out a bit longer than usual.
Buddha Bar Manila is an original franchise of the world renowned high end bar chain. "Conceived by French native Raymond Visan, the Buddha brand is a global one that was launched back in 1996 and has kept its tradition of being the place to see and be seen in. And while Buddha-Bar thrives on “exclusivity,” it does cater to a wide range of patrons. For people-on-the-go, the Buddha-Bar Manila has especially designed the Early Bird and After Work offerings which might surprise you. But for those who are out for a longer rendezvous, an Asian Pacific Rim menu with the perfect blend of zesty Asian sweets and lavish French excellence awaits."

We had a quick tour around the sprawling restaurant with Arianne and Chad, the very accommodating BB Manila representatives who arranged this special dinner for me and my friends. After the tour we were greeted by the friendly Chef Soc Santos who prepared all the best selling dishes for us to try. All the dishes served were superb but my personal favorites were:

1) Thai Style Red Curry  Shrimp
If there's one thing I would order again--it would be this. I love Thai food and Chef Soc did such a beautiful job of blending the curry with coconut sauces without overpowering the shrimp.

2)Pork Spare Ribs with Asian BBQ sauce
This was cooked to perfection and a favorite of the boys. Comfort food for the MEN in our group.

3)Their exciting sushi selection
Who doesn't like sushi?? ("We don't!!!"-Innocent tuna fish swimming in the sea) Buddha Bar is well known for their sophisticated sushi concoctions. These are actually perfect as finger foods  (well, you still have to use chopsticks!) while lounging at the bar. Patrick loved their vegetarian sushi the best!

4)Chocolate Sesame Bar
This was a very interesting dessert, it's a bit nutty and goes well with the chocolate.

5) Buddha Bar Signature Iced Tea
Upon entering we were each given a cold glass of their iced tea. I wasn't expecting anything fabulous..after all it was just a glass of the most mundane drink ever. Then I took a sip and I felt sorry for judging it! It was so refreshing and fruity!!! A far cry from the standard iced tea we've all grown accustomed to.

After dinner we decided to have some wine at the rooftop/pool deck which was SPECTACULAR by the way! If you want to WOW your guests for your next birthday, I suggest you book this venue. The soothing tracks of the original Buddha Bar compilation in the background will take you to a whole new level of cool!
Thank you again so much to Buddha Bar Manila for being such gracious hosts!

Sugar and Spice Anniversary Blow Out

There are always three things that our guests bring up when talking about our wedding: 1) Our Vows 2) Kaye Cunanan's steak and last but definitely not the least, 3) The Candy Buffet. Thank you Carms and Mel for making our wedding extra sweet! Tomorrow, Sugar and Spice will be turning ONE!!! That's right, it's only been a year and they've already taken the industry by storm. Chores, Chores, Chores

For the average Filipino family, chores like washing, taking out the trash, sweeping, mopping, doing the laundry are things that are often assigned to helpers. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a home with loving helpers too, just like most of you. They have been with us for decades and are really part of our family. I had a very happy childhood because of them and I hope someday I will be in a good position to repay them for all their years of dedicated service to our family. Currently my parents have been saving up to build small homes for our helpers for their future retirement. My parents are not excessively wealthy so they've been paying through installments, little by little. It hurts their pockets too but I can imagine it brings a lot of joy for them to be able to set aside money to bless those who have been blessings to us for so long. I guess it's their way of honoring our helpers&drivers who have given so much to us. This is the same relationship I wish to have with my household employees in the future and as early as now I've been praying for Patrick and I to have the provision to compensate our helpers properly and to treat them with the utmost respect just like any other professional in the workplace.

At the moment, we don't have a helper. It's just me and Patrick in our cozy condo for now. We have hired a cleaning assistant to come in once in a while and we have our laundry done outside (because we don't have space for a washing machine here), but everything else we do together as a couple. Being able to manage our household has been a challenge and a cause for petty spats and misunderstandings, but we've been able to create some sort of rhythm in the nearly 4 months of living together and I'm happy to report that we're doing a pretty good job.

I'm not saying it's been smooth sailing everyday---I still have to drag my feet to the kitchen every time the clock alerts me that my dinner should be in its cooking stage. I don't like getting my hands dry and itchy after washing the dishes. And to this day, I completely hate taking out the trash! (That's why  it's Patrick's assignment!) It's not like the chores became FUN all of a sudden---like Oh Joy! Ang sarap mag-walis ng sahig! Hahaha! The chores are still tiring, time consuming, and an overall hassle. But it's our attitude towards doing housework that has changed.

I honestly feel that by doing housework consistently and effectively, we're able to practice our teamwork as a couple. It's also a way for us to display affection through acts of service. Whenever Patrick steps in to take over in washing the dishes, or when he sets the table without me even asking, or when he changes the towels in the bathroom---these little deeds show that he's always thinking of ways to make things less inconvenient for me.

I love that I have a very secure man who doesn't mind doing household chores and that he's not gripped by that societal pressure to be macho and leave all the work to the misis. We're equal partners in our home and we distribute the work evenly. In fact, now that I'm not able to do strenuous activities (due to my operation), Patrick has been stepping up even more with the chores. I recall hearing a girl saying that she and her husband couldn't move out of their parents' home because her husband "hates doing chores". Single girls, please do NOT marry someone with a senyorito complex! Marry someone who you can take care of and who will take care of you too. Hindi yung utos lang ng utos, naku, patay tayo diyan!

Someday I'm sure we will have helpers of our own too, if God grants us that comfort and luxury. But it's great being in this season in our life right now--being able to be productive and efficient in tandem. Just so when things get rough in the future, we know that we will be able to take care of each other because we started from scratch. Thank you Lord for humble beginnings! | All Rights Reserved. 2011.
