As most of you know, my Mom hails from Mati, Davao Oriental which is a good 2.5 drive from the city. We spent a few days between the holidays to visit my grandmother, Inday Sibala. It was so nice for Theo to be able to see his great-great-grandmother and to get to connect to his Dabawenyo roots as well.
Since we had a full day in Davao City before flying back to Manila, I wanted to try something new. My friend, Meg Hernandez, has been my go-to-girl for all things Davao and Cebu! She always gives the best recommendations and I’m never disappointed when I go with her list 🙂 She highly recommended the newly opened BONDI AND BOURKE in Davao. Prior to this visit, I actually have been meaning to visit their branch in BGC—and so it was quite cool that my first encounter with this Australian restaurant would be in Davao! My family and I were guests of the B&B’s very own Chef Patrick McCarthy and his charming wife, Chiche for a New Year’s lunch and it was the perfect year starter indeed.
Set in a beautiful white ancestral home in the Legaspi Suites Compound in Pelayo Street, this restaurant promises a different kind of foodie experience for the Davao crowd. It was so impressive in fact, my parents went back to the hotel and convinced all our titas and titos to book a table—immediately! Hahahaha! The food and service were amazing and I am so happy we were able to book a table on a holiday.
The superstars for me would have to be these 5 items on their menu:
Bourke Salad– Just as yummy as it is pretty! A refreshing salad with the parma ham to balance it with a bit of salt.
Grilled Artisan Sausages – A meat lover’s delight. This HEAVY starter is great for sharing. Pat and I just recently had a sausage fest in Munich (okay, we are wholesome here!!) and this was at par with the German platters we had just weeks ago. Excellent sausages!
Spinach& Bacon Cheese Fondue– Anything with Spinach and Cheese is bound for glory! And then you add BACON?!!?!? Come on, that’s just TOO MUCH goodness! HAHAHA! But this just really hits the spot in terms of comfort food. Great healthy choice for kids too 🙂
Slow Roasted Pork Belly – MamaMia!!! This is tied with the Steak as BEST BONDI&BOURKE dish in my book. It takes 6 hours to perfectly roast this baby, so you can imagine all the juicy goodness that comes in each perfect bite. And it comes with the most heavenly pureed squash and chili with stewed apples—I would fly all the way back to Davao just for this.
US Creekside Steak – This fabulously cooked steak reminded me why I am and will never ever be a vegetarian. HAHAHA! It was seared to perfection and seasoned just so delicately 🙂 SO GOOD! Please order this whenever you’re in B&B!
Patrick and Chiche, thanks again for hosting us last January 1 🙂 We will definitely be back for more B&B goodness!!!
