The Power of Your First Meal

Today I just thought of writing about my favorite meal of the day (again!). I realize that for most working class people, it’s something that is often taken for granted. But trust me, it will change your life if you adapt a more regular breakfast habit!

I was a breakfast eater all my life, it was mandatory in our household and we wouldn’t be allowed to leave the house without finishing breakfast. My breakfast eating habits changed drastically when I started hosting the morning show BREAKFAST. I was hosting Breakfast without eating a proper Breakfast! How ironic, huh? I would wake up at 4AM everyday and zoom to the studio then after the show, I would rush to my 9AM class in Ateneo. The first official meal I would have was an unhealthy lunch in between classes. I was always tired because of sleep deprivation and also because I was running low on energy thanks to my breakfast-less mornings. 

Years later, I started teaching preschool. Because it was such a physically demanding job, I knew I had to make time to have a decent meal before heading to work. So I ATE breakfast again, regularly. Within weeks of returning to my breakfast routine, I was feeling more focused and alert—-and best of all, I was losing weight! I was never really big to begin with, but I was never skinny too. I’ve had this body type for most of my adult life. But when I started eating breakfast, I was shedding those little stubborn pounds and eventually I hit my ideal weight. I felt strong but light, all because I decided to eat breakfast again! According to WebMD, “Many studies, in both adults and children, have shown that breakfast eaters tend to weigh less than breakfast skippers. Why? One theory suggests that eating a healthy breakfast can reduce hunger throughout the day, and help people make better food choices at other meals. While it might seem you could save calories by skipping breakfast, this is not an effective strategy. Typically, hunger gets the best of breakfast-skippers, and they eat more at lunch and throughout the day.”


Now that I’m managing our household (of two! hahaha), I always make it a point to have breakfast with Patrick. Except for the times when he has a 5AM call time for a shoot (like today!)—I just text him to remind him to have breakfast on the road! Hahahaha!!! Having a decent breakfast everyday will not only give you the nutrients you need to get through the day, it’ll help you with weight management, put you in a good mood, and it’s also a good time to bond with your loved ones too!

  1. Absolutely true! 🙂 I wasn’t that much of a breakfast eater when I stepped out of our university dorm. Living in a boarding house with no one to prepare your food or you’re just too lazy to go out and buy food, breakfast did seem elusive. Now that I’m working, I started “unskipping” breakfast and it totally puts me in a good mood ever since. 😉

    Because of your post, I became aware of its weight management benefits too. Thanks Patty! 🙂

  4. Hi tricia 🙂 Sorry to hear that..perhaps it’s the type of food? Generally this works if you eat a healthy and nutritious meal packed with fiber 🙂
